CUMBIA:

The Roots, Resilience and

Radical Rhythms

From a multi-media approach, we take participants through the history and Diaspora of the Afro-Colombian phenomeno, known as Cumbia.  From the coast of Colombia to the barrios of California, from the bars in Chile to the streets of the Caribbean, Cumbia is Afro-Colombia’s gift to the World.  From Celso Pina to Los Angeles Azules, to Shakira and Wyclef Jean, Cumbia rhythms have been heard around the world.  However, many are not aware about the origins and roots of this Afro-Indigenous music.

In this workshop, we will share the radical roots of Cumbia, it’s borderless spirits and how Afro-Indigenous resilience not only survived, but has evolved and thrived throughout Latin America.
